Mean Green come from behind to take down Ladyjacks for third straight win
DENTON, Texas – After dropping the doubles point in a tightly contested match, the UNT tennis team bounced back in a big way winning five of the six singles points to take down SFA 5-2 Friday at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green won a pair of matches on lines four and six in thrilling three set fashion to pick up their third straight victory in less than a week.
"It was a gritty win today with a lot of lessons," head coach Amanda Stone said. "SFA is a good team, and they kept the pressure on us, but today we didn't budge. It's good to get a hard-fought win early. We weren't at our best tennis today. We struggled and had to overcome ourselves and we were able to win that battle and take SFA down with us. I'm proud of the whole team doubling down and refusing to lose."
Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard continued their strong start to the season at line one doubles with a 6-2 win.
The Ladyjacks fought back, however, winning line two 6-3 and line three 7-5 to take the doubles point and a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles play, Chalard was dominant once again winning the opening set 6-0 and leading in the second 3-0 before her opponent retired due to injury to knot the match at 1-1.
Minutes later, after SFA grabbed a win at line three, Carolina Laydner tied the score once again with a strong second set at line one to win 7-5, 6-0.
Playing at line five, Marina Adati rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the opening set and breezed through the second set to win 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 and give UNT a 3-2 advantage.
The attention then turned to a pair of Mean Green freshmen on courts four and six, both of which lost the opening set in their respective matches.
After dropping the opening set 6-1 and 7-5, respectively, Giulianna Ciangherotti and Pia Petelinsek were each able to grab their second set 6-3 to for a third set.
At line six, Ciangherotti continued her strong play and picked up the match-clinching point with a 1-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory to put the Mean Green up 4-2.
The strong effort did not stop there. At line four, Petelinsek fell behind 0-2 in the decisive third set and responded by winning six of the next seven games to take the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 and give UNT at 5-2 victory.
With the win, North Texas has rebounded from its 0-2 start to move above .500 at 3-2 overall.
The Mean Green return to action Sunday when they welcome TCU to Waranch at 1:00 PM.
