DENTON, Texas – The North Texas volleyball team defeated Tulsa in four sets (25-23, 25-20, 19-25, 25-21) Sunday afternoon in front of a sellout crowd at the North Texas Volleyball Center.
The victory moved the Mean Green to 10-9 on the season and 3-5 in American Conference play, while Tulsa dropped to 14-5 and 6-2 in league action. Sunday's crowd of 580 marked the fourth sellout of the season for North Texas.
"I think we've also proven that we can compete with everybody in the American we've seen so far," head coach Dave Fleming said. "We've just got to work on consistency and cutting down the errors overall."
Reagan Bedell led the Mean Green with a season-high 18 kills and added 10 digs defensively for her first double-double of the year. She finished the day hitting .364 while matching her season-high with a pair of service aces.
"I thought our team all came in with energy and intention," Bedell said. "We came to win. We took no points off. I think overall it was a great team win."
Middle blocker Loredana Fouonji made an immediate impact in her return to the court after missing the previous three matches, recording 11 kills on an error-less .611 hitting percentage. She also tallied eight total blocks, three of which were solo, to tie the second-highest block total of her career.
"It feels amazing honestly, and it's so much more elevated by the love I get from my teammates," Fouonji said. "I think that's the biggest thing. Being able to play together is just such a fun feeling."
The opening set featured a back-and-forth battle that saw 13 ties and eight lead changes before North Texas secured a 25-23 victory. The Mean Green carried that momentum into the second frame, using a 25-20 win to build a two-set advantage.
Tulsa responded in the third set with a 25-19 victory to keep the match alive, but North Texas then hit .393 for 14 kills in the following period to secure a 25-21 win and complete the four-set match victory.
The Mean Green finished the afternoon with 61 kills on a season-best .331 hitting percentage while limiting Tulsa to just 53 kills on a .250 clip. North Texas also held a 45-37 advantage in digs and completed the matched with one more block at the net.
Jahniya Jackson finished with 13 kills on an impressive .400 hitting percentage, while Jocelyn Jourdan boasted a mark of .429 alongside eight kills of her own. Setter Sidney Soria tallied 30 assists, in addition to 21 from freshman Olivia Branum, to guide the Mean Green offense.
North Texas remains home for a pair of American Conference matches next weekend. It hosts Rice on Friday, Oct. 23, at 6 p.m. CT before welcoming UAB two days later. Both contests will be played at the UNT Volleyball Center and broadcast on ESPN+.
