CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The UNT volleyball team nearly completed its second reverse sweep of the season but ultimately fell in five sets (22-25, 14-25, 25-23, 25-18, 9-15) to Charlotte Sunday afternoon at Halton Arena.
North Texas has now dropped three consecutive matches to move to 8-7 on the season and 1-3 in American Conference play. Notably, UNT held the same 1-3 record through four league matches last season before rattling off wins in eight of its next nine contests.
After falling into a 0-2 hole, the Mean Green won consecutive sets to send the match into a deciding fifth game. There, UNT jumped out to an early 5-2 advantage but then surrendered seven points in a row, which was enough to carry the 49ers to victory. Despite 63 North Texas kills, the Charlotte defense recorded 16 blocks at the net and forced UNT into 40 attack errors alongside a .120 hitting percentage.
Outside hitter Jahniya Jackson led both teams with 21 kills, marking the most by a Mean Green player this season. She has now reached double-digit kills in 10 straight matches and led North Texas in kills 10 times. Lillian Croshaw also provided 15 kills of her own, good for the second-highest total during Sunday's action.
At the setter position, Sidney Soria recorded her fourth double-double of the season through 27 assists and 10 digs. Defensively, four Mean Green players reached double-digit digs for the second time this season, including a team-high 18 from Reagan Bedell.
The Mean Green return to the UNT Volleyball Center to host South Florida on Friday at 6 p.m. The match will once again be available for streaming on ESPN+.
