DENTON, TX – The American Conference Preseason Player of the Year, junior Je'Shawn Stevenson, scored a career high 30 points as UNT upended McNesse 77-67 Thursday afternoon at The Super Pit.
Stevenson's scoring explosion notched the first 30-point performance of the Head Coach Daniyal Robinson era and the first such game since Atin Wright's 42 points against Charlotte during the 2024-25 season. The junior's 30 points came on 12-for-22 shooting, a career high for him (second 10+ FG game of his career) and the most by a Mean Green student-athlete since Wright's same 42-point game.
However, Stevenson was adept at more than just scoring, posting a game high five assists – marking the second time in his career he's dished out five or more assists in consecutive games. To finish his contest, he also pulled down five rebounds.
The guard was complimented by his backcourt mate, junior Cash Chavis, who contributed 12 points – all of which came in the second half. Chavis was particularly effective at the free throw line where he shot seven-for-eight.
Freshman Aeneas Alexander followed up his banner debut with a ten-point showing in which he went 3-for-7 from the floor with a pair of threes, and five rebounds. Sophomore Ousmane Ndour led the team on the glass with eight rebounds.
Despite the double-digit win, UNT had to climb out of its own double-digit deficit after conceding a 13-3 run to open the game. What followed was 10-2 run that trimmed the McNeese lead to two, only for the Cowboys to expand the lead back to nine at 23-14. From that point, though, the Cowboys would never lead again by more than seven and after relinquishing the lead at the 1:17 mark of the first half, never led again.
Beyond Stevenson's play, two of the major catalysts for UNT's success came from points off turnovers and points in the paint. The Mean Green outscored the Cowboys 22-10 and 34-18 in those categories respectively and made transition opportunities count, putting up a 19-9 advantage.
Coming up next for the Mean Green is a rematch with NCAA Tournament team Santa Clara, looking to avenge a three-point loss suffered to the Broncos on a neutral court last season. UNT will have nearly a week to prepare as the game is not until November 11 at 7 PM in The Super Pit.
