Mean Green fall in narrow match against Bulldogs before sweeping past Coyotes
DENTON, Texas – The UNT tennis team split a pair of matches Monday, dropping a tight 4-3 decision against LA Tech before bouncing back for a 4-0 sweep of Weatherford College at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Mean Green moved their overall record to 4-4 while LA Tech improved to 5-2 and Weatherford dropped to 1-2 in dual matches.
"It was a tough loss against LA Tech today, but I think we competed with everything we had," head coach Amanda Stone said. "I'm especially proud of the doubles teams because that point is going to continue to be really important this year. I thought the team showed a lot of maturity to clear the loss and come out and really dominate on all courts in the second match. We know this is a season of inches and we must continue to work hard for everyone. We will be in this situation again and the more we are tested the better we will ultimately become."
True freshman Pia Petelensik had a standout day with a singles wins in straight sets in each match on the day, including grabbing the match-clinching point for UNT against Weatherford. She also picked up a 6-0 victory with Carolina Laydner at line two doubles against the Coyotes.
In addition, Lou Chalard was also perfect on the day with a strong 6-1, 6-2 win at line two over LA Tech while also teaming up for a strong 6-3 victory at line on doubles with Lilly Schultz.
In the first matchup of the day against the Bulldogs, UNT took home the doubles point thanks to the wins from Chalard and Schultz as well as a line two victory by Laydner and Marina Adati 6-3 to move ahead 1-0.
The win for Chalard and Schultz was one of the strongest of the year for the Mean Green as they took down 2025 First Team All-CUSA selection Zoie Epps and Isabella Walker to hand the duo their second loss of the year and snap a four-match winning streak.
In singles play, Chalard made the score 2-0 with her straight sets win to improve her singles mark to 3-1 this season.
After the Bulldogs picked up a win at line four, Petelinsek pushed the UNT lead to 3-1 with a strong 6-2, 6-3 victory at line five.
LA Tech responded, however, grabbing wins at lines one, three and six to pick up the come-from-behind win 4-3.
In the second match of the day, the Mean Green won the doubles point once again thanks to a dominant 6-0 win by Petelinsek and Laydner at line two as well as a 6-2 win from the freshman combination of Ujin Batsukh and Giulianna Ciangherotti 6-3 at line three.
The freshmen shined once again in singles play with Petelinsek, Ciangherotti and Batsukh all won in straight sets at lines four, five and six. In total, the trio lost just two total points across the three matches with Ciagherotti dominating 6-0, 6-0 and Petelinsek and Batsukh each winning 6-0, 6-1.
The sweep win was the second sweep of the year after defeating UIW 7-0 earlier this season.
