IRVING - The UNT track and field program swept the weekly American Conference track awards, as junior Chase Lehr and junior Aariyana Williams were named Men's and Women's Track Athlete of the Week, respectively, the league announced on Tuesday.
Lehr broke his own program record on his way to a win in the 800 meters at the New Mexico Team Open with a blazing time of 1:47.35, which is the fastest time in The American this season and is the 14th fastest time in the NCAA. Williams added her name to the program record for the fourth time in two meets, as she set the new 400-meter record with a win in 52.79 - the 18th best time in the country this season - after breaking a 40-year-old 300-meter program record in the season opener two weeks ago. She also ran the second leg of the 4x400-meter relay in a program record time of 3:41.13, which broke the record set in the season opener.
"I'm extremely proud of Chase and Ari for sweeping the conference Track awards this past week," said UNT director of track and field Doug Marshall. "Both are incredible athletes but even more impressive human beings. They deserve this award."
The Mean Green will be back in competition on Friday, as they head to the Oklahoma Classic in Norman, Oklahoma.
