BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNT women's basketball team cruised past Florida Atlantic, 80-57, Tuesday afternoon at Legacy Arena to secure a spot in the American Conference Championship quarterfinals.
North Texas (18-13, 11-7 American) once again dominated both ends of the floor, securing its third win over FAU by at least 18 points this season. It held the Owls to just 23 points in the first half and forced 19 turnovers, which resulted in 21 points for the Mean Green. Tuesday's contest also saw UNT shoot 47% from behind the arc and make 18 of its 22 free throw attempts.
"Being able to come out and play with energy and get this first win is crucial for us," head coach Jason Burton said. "I thought our team played tremendous today, and we've got to carry that forward the rest of this week."
Four Mean Green players scored in double digits, including a game-high 24 from Aysia Proctor. She matched her career high with five three-pointers and shot 8-for-13 from the field en route to her sixth 20-point game of the year. In the frontcourt, Megan Nestor tallied 16 points and 12 rebounds to become the third UNT player to ever record 20 double doubles in a single season.
In addition, the victory gave Burton his 66th as head coach at North Texas, tying Judy Nelson for third most in program history.
The Mean Green will now play fourth-seeded Tulsa on Thursday at noon with a semifinal berth on the line. That game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ while Sam Kaman provides radio coverage through the Varsity Network App.
