BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UNT women's basketball team advanced to the American Conference Championship semifinals after a 76-73 win over Tulsa Thursday at Legacy Arena.
North Texas (19-13, 11-7 American) shot 45% from the field and scored 32 points in the paint to secure its second win of the week. It built a lead as high as 19 points in the third quarter thanks to an extended 30-10 run, which was ultimately enough to hold off a late surge by the Golden Hurricane. The Mean Green also controlled the possession battle by forcing 16 turnovers and outrebounding Tulsa 37-28.
In addition, the victory gave Jason Burton his 67th as head coach at North Texas, moving him past Judy Nelson for third most in program history.
"This team has been so fun to coach because of their belief," Burton said. "Every single huddle that we went to today, they're saying the right stuff. Didn't matter if we were up or down or Tulsa was going on a run. We're talking the right things in the huddles and we are getting back refocused."
For the second game in a row, four Mean Green players scored in double digits. Leading the pack was Andi Schissler, who poured in 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. She also made three more three-pointers Thursday, improving her to 35-of-73 from deep over the last dozen games.
Meanwhile, Jazzy Owens-Barnett nearly posted a double double with 14 points, a career-high nine assists, five rebounds and two steals. She joined Heather Trout from the 2002-03 squad as the only players in program history with nine assists in a conference tournament game.
The Mean Green will now play top-seeded Rice Friday at 6 p.m. with a finals berth on the line. That game will be available for streaming on ESPN+ while Sam Kaman provides radio coverage through the Varsity Network App.
