Birmingham, Alabama – The UNT men's basketball team lost in triple overtime in the American Conference Championship quarterfinals Friday afternoon with a 90-84 defeat to the No. 3 seed Tulsa.
The Mean Green (19-14) were led in scoring by Je'Shawn Stevenson who played 44 minutes and finished with 21 points and was 10-10 at the free throw line. He though was outdone by the Golden Hurricane's (26-6) Tylen Riley who finished with 26 points and was 17-17 at the free throw line.
Stevenson was one of four UNT players in double figures. David Terrell Jr. played a team-high 48 minutes and scored 17 points to go along with five assists. Cole Franklin matched his single game career high with three made 3-pointers as he finished with 15 points and Buddy Hammer Jr. came off the bench and matched his career high with 12 points.
"If there was a way I wanted to go out it would have been like that," said North Texas head coach Daniyal Robinson. "Our guys left it all out on the floor and gave it their all. Credit to Tulsa, of course, they're a great team."
Friday's game lasted just under four hours. It was UNT's fourth triple overtime game in program history and its first since 2009.
