IRVING, Texas — UNT sophomore Olu Williams has been named the American Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his performance over the weekend at the TCU Alumni Invite in Fort Worth, the league announced on Tuesday.
Williams won the men's discus and was the runner-up in the shot put to get his outdoor season started on a high note after a successful indoor season that included a conference championship in the shot put.
Williams' throw of 58.68 meters in the discus set a new personal best by four meters and is the fifth-best throw in the NCAA this year. His throw of 17.23 meters in the shot put was good for second and was the top performance by a collegiate athlete.
"Olu is truly a special young man not just an athlete," said assistant coach/throws coach Marco A. Brown. "He is dedicated to his craft and does all the little things right and wants to be the best he can be every day. This accomplishment and his performance this past weekend only scratches the surface of what he is really capable of. Coach Marshall and I are excited about what the rest of his season may bring."
The Mean Green will return to competition at the Texas Relays, which will run April 1-4, at the University of Texas in Austin.
