Marco A. Brown was hired as UNT track & field's assistant coach for throws and meet director on Aug. 24, 2023.
His presence was felt immediately by a throws group that posted eight school record performances in his first year at North Texas. He coached five athletes to AAC all-conference honors, including KeAyla Dove who won the AAC indoor shot put and went on to earn second-team All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Championships. During the outdoor season, the men's javelin group was ranked as high as No. 14 in the country in the USTFCCCA Event Ranking, led by Zion Hill and AAC bronze medalist Akeel Hanchard.
In 2025, Brown coached Jake Parchman to a pair of conference titles in the weight throw and hammer throw, while shattering school records in both events. In addition, Hanchard once again took third in the javelin throw at the outdoor meet. Maybe most impressive though, was Brown's work with the women's throwers following injuries to all-conference performers Allison Stigarll and Dionna James. He coached three newcomers to podium finishes with freshman Ava Roberts garnering All-AAC accolades in the shot put at both conference meets, and Bolaji Subair (Discus) and Fabrienne Foster (Weight Throw) both earning runner-up finishes in their events. Javelin thrower Mackenzie Kuehl also saw major improvement from the 2024 season, increasing her personal best by over four meters resulting in a third-place finish at the AAC Championships and her first career berth to the regional meet.
Â
Brown joined the Mean Green after spending the previous two years as an assistant coach at Morgan State, serving primarily as the throws coach and recruiting coordinator. He has coached 26 MEAC championship performances throughout his career. At Morgan State he coached Johnelle Johnson to four conference championships in both the shot put and discus en route to her earning team MVP on two separate occasions. He also coach John Purvis to three conference titles in the shot put and guided him to outdoor conference meet MVP honors. He coached Zach Dillon to two conference championships in both the shot put and discus, and he oversaw Terine Lambert becoming a two-time indoor and outdoor conference champion in shot put. Brown also coached Brylan Carter to the 2023 outdoor silver medal in the women's javelin.
