Mean Green also extend home win streak to eight, longest streak since 2012
DENTON, Texas – Junior Lilly Schultz won a three-set thriller at line four to clinch a 4-3 victory over Liberty for the UNT tennis team Friday at the Waranch Tennis Complex and give the Mean Green its 14th win of the season, the most since the 2013 season.
North Texas won the doubles point for the seventh straight match and got singles victories from Lou Chalard and Carolina Laydner along with Schultz to push their home winning streak to eight straight matches and improve their overall record to 14-6.
With the win, UNT's string of eight consecutive home wins is the longest since winning 11 straight home contests in 2012.
"We bounced back in a big way today with the win over Liberty," head coach Amanda Stone said. "I was really proud of how the team took the lessons from last weekend and used those to fuel us today. It's important that this team embraces who they are and take the matches to the place where we excel. That's the doubles and everyone competing on every line to the very end. When the pressure builds, we've proven we can deliver in those moments. We took it there today and everyone contributed to the victory."
In doubles action, Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard added another victory to their ledger with a 6-1 win at line one. The duo is now 11-4 overall this season, the most for a line one doubles team since Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze went 12-1 as a team in 2019.
The Flames were able to pick up a win at line three doubles to knot things up and bring the doubles point down to line two.
Marina Adati and Ujin Batsukh answered the call for the Mean Green with a 7-5 victory to win the doubles point. Adati and Batsukh remain perfect in doubles matches this season at 4-0 with the win.
To start singles play, Liberty took the lead for the first time in the match with wins at lines five and six but Chalard evened things up at 2-2 with a strong 6-3, 6-4 victory at line two. Chalard is now 9-5 overall this season and is 5-3 at line two.
Liberty took the lead one more time with a win at line three, but Laydner bounced back after dropping the second set at line one and was dominant in the third set to grab the win and make the score 3-3. Laydner won the match 6-1, 1-6, 6-0 for her 12th win of the season as she improved to 8-2 at line one on the year.
The match came down to line four where Schultz split her opening two sets 6-4, 4-6. The junior from Bad Soden, Germany, was strong in the third set, winning 6-3 and sealing the victory for the Mean Green. It was Schultz' third singles win of the year.
UNT will return to action Sunday as they host No. 26 Wichita State at 10:00 AM at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
