No. 1 Doubles team of Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz pick up third ranked victory of the season
DENTON, Texas – The UNT tennis team pushed the No. 26 Wichita State Shockers won the doubles point and pushed four different singles matches to three sets before falling 4-1 Sunday at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The stellar combination of Lilly Schultz and Lou Chalard highlighted the day as they knocked off the 24th-ranked doubles team in the nation in WSU's Giorgia Roselli and Xin Tong Wang.
The combination of Schultz and Chalard picked up their victory 6-3 for their 12th doubles win of the season. It was the third time this spring the duo has defeated a ranked opponent after knocking off No. 82 Houston and No. 50 LA Tech earlier in the year.
"We had a lot of motivation going into the match knowing the team we played won the beat us in the quarterfinals and won doubles title at the American Championships last fall," Schultz said. "We've worked a lot during the season with the idea that we were going to play them again and had a lot of motivation to beat them. So after we won we were extremely happy and even happier when we realized it was actually to clinch the doubles point because we know how hard we've worked."
Elsewhere in doubles play, Pia Petelinsek and Carolina Laydner picked up the first win of the day for the Mean Green with a strong 6-3 victory at line three. Petelinsek and Laydner are now 7-2 as a duo this season and are 5-1 playing together at line three.
The wins at lines three and one gave North Texas the doubles point for the eighth consecutive match. UNT now holds a 15-6 overall record in doubles points this season.
The win over the No. 24 doubles duo in the country was the highest ranked win of any doubles team in head coach Amanda Stone's tenure as a head coach at UNT.
Singles action was tightly contested throughout the match with four different lines playing into the third set. The Shockers and the Mean Green split the first two sets at lines one, two, five and six in the match.
Despite falling behind by dropping the opening set, Laydner, Chalard and Batsukh all bounced back to win the second set and force a third.
Wichita State was able to take a 2-1 advantage with straight set wins at lines three and four and then pushed the lead to 3-1 with a three-set win at line five and won the match after taking another three-setter on line six.
When the match was abandoned, Chalard led 3-1 in her third set after splitting the first two sets 3-6, 6-3.
