UNT Closes regular season with 12-5 home record
DENTON, Texas – In the final regular season home contest at the Waranch Tennis Complex, the UNT tennis team defeated Abilene Christian Thursday afternoon 4-2.
With the win, North Texas set a new program record with its 12th home win of the season as the Mean Green improve to 15-7 overall this season.
Prior to the match, UNT celebrated its lone departing senior Marina Adati who played in her final home match after spending four years in Denton.
"The win today was a great way to close out the home season and honor Marina," head coach Amanda Stone said. "She's been such a significant piece in building the culture of this program and it's really fitting that we set a record on her last home match. In doubles, Carolina and Lou delivered again today and in singles I'm happy and encouraged with Lilly and Giuliana stepping up in the back courts. This team has earned every victory and every milestone this season and there is more opportunity ahead of us. I'm excited to see how we continue to battle through these challenges as we finish up and head into post season."
The doubles point success continued once again as UNT won the doubles point for the ninth consecutive match and are 14-2 in doubles point opportunities in its last 16 matches.
At line three, Pia Petelinsek and Carolina Laydner won their match first with a 6-3 victory. Petelinsek and Laydner are now 8-2 as a combination this season and are 6-1 at line three.
Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz then clinched the point with a 6-4 victory at line one. The duo is now 13-4 as a combo this season, the most wins by a line one doubles team since Maria Kononova and Tamuna Kutubidze won 17 in the 2017 season.
Leading 1-0 heading into singles play, the Wildcats tied the match with a singles win at line six, but Laydner gave UNT the lead once again with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at line one. The junior from Londrina, Brazil, is now 13-3 in singles matches this season and is 9-2 at line one.
After ACU tied the match once again with a singles win at line three, Chalard pushed UNT ahead for the final time with a 6-4, 6-3 win at line three for her 10th singles win of the season.
Moments later at line five, Giuliana Ciangherotti clinched the match for North Texas with a 7-5, 6-1 victory to make the final score 4-2. In her first collegiate season, Ciangherotti is now 8-6 overall.
With one regular season match remaining, UNT is now 15-7 overall and 12-5 at home. The 15 overall wins is the most since 2013 when the Mean Green posted an 18-win season.
The Mean Green close the regular season Friday with a road contest at Tarleton State at 1:00 pm ahead of the American Conference Tournament in Houston hosted by Rice next weekend.
