DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team's head coach Daniyal Robinson announced the signing on transfer forward Mitchell Holmes on Monday.
The rising redshirt sophomore joins the Mean Green after playing his first two seasons at SMU. The Fort Worth native played in 26 games last year for the Mustangs who won 20 games and reached the NCAA Tournament, which Holmes saw action in. A 6-foot-10 post, Holmes averaged 1.7 points, 0.9 rebounds and shot 70.4 percent from the floor for SMU.
"Mitchell is a high-character young man who brings size, skill, and mobility to our frontcourt," Robinson said "He's a high-IQ player with a strong feel for the game and valuable experience at a high level. Being a DFW product, it was important to him to play in front of his family, and we're proud to keep a player like that at home. He's a young man with tremendous potential, and we're excited about his continued growth and the presence he'll bring to our frontline."
Holmes last year scored a season high 10 points in just 11 minutes of action in a 87-85 home win over Butler. He scored eight points and had four rebounds in just 12 minutes in a 46-point win over Arkansas Pine Bluff.
Holmes saw no action his freshman season (2024-25) and used it as a developmental redshirt.
A local product, Holmes attended The Oakridge School in Arlington his freshman through junior year of high school. He scored more than 1,500 points in three years at The Oakridge School and was a two-time team MVP.
For his final year of high school, Holmes transferred to Link Year Prep in Branson, Missouri. He led Link Year Prep to the semifinals 2024 Chipotle National Tournament. Holmes was graded as a three-star prospect and a top 10 prospect from Missouri and a top 70 forward nationally. Holmes earned McDonald's All-American nominee honors while at Link Year Prep.
Holmes played AAU for ProSkills and joins North Texas with three years of eligibility remaining.
