Rising Second-Year Braylon Barnes Inks with the Mean Green
DENTON – The UNT men's basketball team signed 6-foot-4 junior college transfer Braylon Barnes, the program announced Thursday.
The second-year guard comes to the Mean Green from Jones College in Ellisville, Mississippi, where he led the Bobcats to the NJCAA National Tournament as the No. 16 overall seed. Barnes averaged 16.8 points per game in his lone season for Jones College, was voted second team All-Mississippi Association of Community Colleges Conference and was named one of the top 50 junior college freshmen by JUCORecruiting.com.
"We are excited to welcome Braylon to the Mean Green family," head coach Daniyal Robinson said. "He is someone we've had our eyes on because of the way he impacts the game on both ends of the floor. He's a proven scorer with great size on the perimeter, but what really stood out to us was his ability to make winning plays. Above all else Braylon is a high-character young man who fits the culture we're building here, and we're excited to see his impact on North Texas basketball."
Barnes helped lead Jones to the Region 23 Tournament championship with a 17-point performance in a 102-96 victory in the title game against No. 25 Itawamba. Over the three-round regional tournament, Barnes averaged 17.6 points per game and was named to the Region 23 All-Tournament Team.
Jones College was defeated in the first round of the 2026 NJCAA National Tournament, however, Barnes recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. He also had five assists in the national tournament game. It was his second double-double of the year.
Jones College went 24-10 last season. Barnes started every game and scored in double figures in 28 of the 34 games. He scored 20 or more points 11 times, including a season high 29 points twice. He knocked down 62 3-pointers on the year at a 35 percent clip. He made a single-game season high seven 3-pointers on Nov. 24 against No. 8 Gulf Coast State where he finished with 25 points and seven rebounds.
Barnes was Jones College's second leading scorer (572), second leading rebounder (214), made the second-most 3-pointers (62), had the third-most assists (95) and its third-most blocks (17).
Barnes graduated from Brandon High School in Mississippi where he played for his dad, Fredrick. Barnes led Brandon to the MHSAA 7A state semifinal round. He averaged 21.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.2 assists per game during his senior season.
He was the first player in Brandon High School history to be named MHSAA Mr. Basketball. He earned an invite to the 2025 Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Game.
He was a three-time All-District and three-time District All-Tournament Team honoree.
His father Fredrick graduated and played basketball at Alcorn State and has been the head coach at Brandon High School since 2004 where he has won nearly 500 career games for the Bulldogs.
