DALLAS — The UNT women's soccer team opened its regular season on the road Sunday night with a 2-0 loss to SMU.
The Mean Green (0-1-0) hung with the Mustangs in a physical match but conceded a goal off a 20th-minute header and played from behind from that point on in a wide-open second half and SMU found the back of the net again in the 74th minute.
The Mean Green finished with seven shots to SMU's 16 after the Mustangs had nine in the second half with UNT playing from behind. UNT had its best two chances in the first half – one coming off a free kick when Vandiver skied above everyone else and headed a ball just wide of the frame. The other was off the team's lone corner kick when senior captain Mia Bernard played the corner short to junior captain Claire Niedermeier who tapped it back to Bernard deep in the 18-yard box. Bernard curled a shot into a trouble area but it was punched out by SMU goalkeeper Aubrey Brown. The Mean Green dominated play for the first 15 minutes of the second half but couldn't find an equalizer.
Fifth-year goalkeeper Sarah Margaret Seabrook made her second appearance for UNT and her first collegiate start and had a good showing with six saves with help from her central defense as junior captain Hannah Phillips and sophomore Lillian Vandiver both had standout games in the back end while being the only two UNT players to play the full 90 minutes.
"We have to stop looking for the perfect shot and just hit it," head coach John Hedlund said. "That was really the difference in the game — they took their chances in front of goal, while we hesitated.
"But credit to SMU. They have a solid offense, and it showed the other night when they put three on the road against one of the favorites in the SEC this year, Vanderbilt. Defensively, I thought we played well. Offensively, we just need to be more aggressive and take our chances when they come."
The Mean Green will return to Denton for a match Thursday night at 7 p.m., when they host ULM at Norma Knobel Hunt Stadium.
