Mean Green Fall 1-0 to Air Force

DENTON — Heading into a home match against Air Force, UNT junior forward Claire Niedermeier had put herself into the nation's upper echelon of goal scorers in women's college soccer.
She had a couple of chances to add to her total on Sunday night but couldn't convert as the Mean Green fell 1-0 to Air Force, leaving head coach John Hedlund wondering where more goals are going to come from as Niedermeier inevitably won't score every night she takes the pitch.
"If Claire's not scoring, I don't know where the goals are going to come from," he said. "She was a little off tonight - looked tired. She missed a couple of easy sitters she normally puts in. But that's OK. We've been leaning on her for goals and we didn't get it tonight from her. Others have to step up and they didn't do it. That's the disappointing thing for me."
The Mean Green (2-2-1) outshot Air Force (4-1-0) by a tally of 16-15, as the teams played to a scoreless draw for the first three quarters of the match.
The Falcons turned up the pressure in the second half, as UNT goalkeeper Sarah Margaret Seabrook finished with a career-high seven saves despite having none in the first half. Air Force finally broke through in the 74th minute with a goal off the head of Maddy Walsh inside the 6-yard box as Seabrook was on the ground after diving to save the first Falcons shot off the crossbar.
After that, the Mean Green had chances, including a couple from Niedermeier, a header off a corner kick from Beya Rosales and another shot off the foot of Mia Bernard on the same set piece. But none could beat Air Force keeper Trishelle Lopez, who had six saves.
The Mean Green will stay at home Thursday to face Oklahoma (5-0-1), who drew 1-1 on Sunday night with an Oral Roberts team UNT earned a 1-1 draw with on Thursday. That match is set for kickoff at 7 p.m.
"We have to get ready for OU, a team that could probably win the SEC this year," Hedlund said. "It doesn't get any easier. I could've scheduled a lot of awful teams in non-conference, but I believe in them and trust them and that's why we scheduled all these tough games. Hopefully that'll help us when we hit conference play."
