Tennis Starts Fall with Strong Showing in Pair of Tournaments

CARY, N.C./ABILENE, TX – The UNT tennis team kicked off its fall season with strong showings in a pair of tournaments over the weekend.
The Mean Green sent three athletes each to Cary, N.C., and Abilene, Texas, to compete in the ITA All-American Championships and the ACU Invite, respectively.
At the All-American Championships, true freshman Zimora McKnight kicked her UNT career off with a bang with a 7-5, 6-0 win over Brown's Abigail Lee to advance to the second round of pre-qualifying. McKnight would go on to drop her next matchup in the against Ava Krug from Duke 6-4, 6-2.
Elsewhere in the All-American, the doubles combination of Lou Chalard and Lilly Schultz found themselves in a consolation matchup against TCU's Cayetena Gay and Christian Ramos Sierra, both of who were All-Big 12 performers for the Horned Frogs a season ago.
Chalard and Schultz continued their impressive play, dismantling Gay and Ramos Sierra 6-4, 6-3 to leave North Carolina with a win.
At the ACU Invite, Ujin Batsukh, Maya Chen and Giuliana Ciangherotti all competed in singles and Batsukh and Chen teamed up to play in doubles.
The doubles combo of Batsukh and Chen highlighted the competition for the Mean Green, sweeping through the main draw with a 6-1 win over UTA on day one, a 6-2 victory over SMU on day two and then winning the main draw championship with a 6-3 victory over Texas State in the title match.
In addition, both Chen and Ciangherotti advanced all the way to the championship match in their respective draws.
Playing in Draw "B" Chen opened with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Sofia Selle of UTA and followed it with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Anna Huisgen from Tarleton State. She then fell in a three-set thriller in the title match against Texas Tech's Raegan Farm 4-6, 6-3, 10-4.
A similar fate met Ciangerhotti playing in Draw "C" as she opened the tournament with a 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win over Alejandra Corroto Etchenique from ACU and followed it with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Texas State's Avery Arant to advance to the draw championship. In the final, Ciangherotti fell 6-4, 6-3 against UTA's Tasnime Ahamout.
Play in Draw "A", Batsukh fell in her first matchup of the tournament in a thriller 4-6, 6-4, 11-9. She bounced back in a big way, however, winning 6-3, 6-2 over Charlotte Roesch from Texas State and taking the consolation title.
The Mean Green are back in action this weekend as they compete in the Lumberjack Classic hosted by Northern Arizona in Flagstaff, Arizona.
