Joe Whelan is entering his first year as a volunteer assistant coach for the University of North Texas Cross Country and Track and Field teams.Â
Before deciding to pursue a career in coaching, Whelan was a member of Stotan Racing, a Nike sponsored post-collegiate running club based in Syracuse, NY from 2014-2015. Whelan was also NCAA Division I student-athlete for Syracuse University from 2009 to 2014, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Public Health. The Hamburg, NY native, helped lead the Orange with four NCAA Division I Cross Country Championship appearances, two Big East Cross Country Championship victories (2010, 2012), and the 2015 ACC Cross County Championship title, the first ACC title in school history. On the track, Whelan's accolades include two appearances at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Chapionships East Preliminary Rounds. At this meet in 2012, he posted his personal best time in 3000-meter steeplechase of 8:53.53, placing 17th. He was a multiple-time scorer on the track at the conference level.Â
Whelan represented the United States in the 3000-meter steeplechase internationally at the 2009 Pan-American Junior Track and Field Championships, qualifying with a runner-up finish at the 2009 USA Junior Track and Field Championships.Â
Prior to Syracuse University, Whelan attended Hamburg High School and was the 2008 Gatorade Player of the Year in New York. During his senior year, he earned a ninth-place finish earning all-american at the 2008 Footlocker Cross Country Championships and was the New York cross country state champion.Â
At Syracuse University, Whelan received multiple Big East Honor Roll, ACC Honor Roll, and Dean's List academic achievements.
