Â
A native of southeast Texas, Peveto has spent more than 14 years coaching in the state of Texas. The former SMU defensive back joined Texas State after three years at UTEP as the defensive coordinator. He also had in-state stops at Texas A&M, Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Trinity Valley Community College.
Â
Peveto has been a part of teams that have reached 11 bowl games, including the 2007 BCS National Championship with LSU as the national champion's linebackers coach and special teams coordinator. His teams have also made four appearances in the FCS Playoffs and helped lead Stephen F. Austin to a national championship in 1989.
Â
Peveto’s coaching resume also includes appearances in the Texas Bowl (2X), the Tax Slayer Bowl, the Citrus Bowl, the Music City Bowl, the Peach Bowl (2X) and the Sugar Bowl. In addition to his time at Texas schools, Peveto was the head coach at Northwestern State and also has spent time at Southern Miss, Arkansas, Middle Tennessee, Kentucky and Ole Miss.
Â
In 2024 and 2025, Peveto helped Texas State advance to back-to-back bowl games as a part of a three-year string for the first time in program history. Prior to joining the Bobcats, Peveto was the Defensive Coordinator at UTEP from 2021-23, helping the Miners earn a berth in the 2021 New Mexico Bowl.
Â
From 2013-19, Peveto worked in the SEC primarily with linebackers at Kentucky, LSU, Ole Miss and Texas A&M. The string featured appearances in five bowl games in those seven seasons.
Â
Peveto was the head coach at Northwestern State from 2009-12 where he won 14 games over his final three seasons. His time with the Demons was highlighted by working with and developing future sixth round NFL pick and Super Bowl Champion Jeremy Lane, one of just two NFL draft picks out of Northwestern State since 2010.
Â
One of the largest team accomplishments in Peveto’s career was helping the 2007 LSU Tigers team earn a spot in the BCS National Championship game. Peveto served as the Linebackers coach and special teams coordinator at LSU from 2005-08 in a string that featured appearances in the 2005 and 2008 Peach Bowl as well as the 2006 Sugar Bowl along with the 2007 National title game.
A four-year letterwinner as a defensive back at SMU, Peveto served as team captain as a senior in 1986. He was also named the Wild Mustang Special Teams Player of the Year and was the recipient of the Mike Kelsey Award during his playing days. After graduating from SMU in 1987, he added a master’s degree from Stephen F. Austin in 1989.
Peveto comes from a family with a rich football coaching tradition. His late father, Ed, coached high school football in the southeast Texas area and was inducted into the Greater Houston Coaches Hall of Honor in 1993 and into the Golden Triangle Coaches Hall of Fame in 1997.
