Tommy Mainord

Former UNT associate head coach Tommy Mainord was added to the administrative staff at North Texas as Senior Associate AD for NIL/Director of Football Strategy in January of 2026.

In his role, Mainord manage, organize, and advance NIL opportunities for all Mean Green student-athletes while also serving as a member of the UNT football staff.

Mainord re-joined the staff after spending the 2016-21 seasons with the Mean Green. Mainord arrived at UNT in 2016 and was the passing game coordinator/inside wide receivers coach from 2016-18 before being elevated to associate head coach/co-offensive coordinator from 2019-21 while overseeing the wide receivers.

Mainord has extensive connections and coaching experience throughout the state of Texas after spending time on staff at Texas Tech, Lamar, Sam Houston and Tarleton State during his coaching tenue.

Mainord also spent time at Kentucky from 2013-15 where he worked under UNT head coach Neal Brown as wide receivers coach while Brown served as the offensive coordinator from 2013-14.

Through the entire of Mainord’s first stint in Denton, the UNT offense proved itself to be one of the top units in Conference USA and the nation. UNT’s offenses ranked in top three in total offense, top two in pass offense, and top three in scoring in CUSA for four consecutive seasons from 2017-20.

The Mean Green also led CUSA in rushing in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons, both totals that rank among the top 10 in North Texas history.

In 2020, senior wide receiver Jaelon Darden had an All-America season, earning honors from every major outlet/awards group at either first or second team levels. Darden caught 74 passes for 1,190 yards and 19 touchdowns in just nine games and was named the Conference USA Most Valuable Player. Darden finished his Mean Green career as the all-time program leader in career receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

After the season, Darden was selected in the fourth round (No. 129 overall) of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mainord brought several years of offensive coaching success to Lexington, including 2010-12 with Texas Tech. In every season in Lubbock, Mainord helped lead Texas Tech to top 10 national rankings in passing offense, top 15 in total offense and top 25 in scoring offense.

The 2011 Red Raider offense finished seventh in passing offense, racking up 4,145 passing yards. Mainord’s squad also performed well in 2010, including Lyle Leong, who ranked second nationally with 19 touchdown catches.

Before his stint in Lubbock, Mainord was named the offensive coordinator at Lamar in Sept. 2008 as the Cardinals’ program began preparation to return to the field in 2010 after being dormant for more than 20 years.

Mainord had a three-year stint at Sam Houston from 2005-07, spending three seasons as an assistant coach for wide receivers and running backs. In 2007, SHSU ranked 16th in the country in passing offense and 21st in total offense. Following the season, Mainord was promoted to co-offensive coordinator.

Mainord tutored several talented players while with the Bearkats, including D.D. Terry, who rushed for a school-record 1,328 yards. Terry was honored as the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was one of 16 finalists for the Walter Payton Award, which honors the Division I FCS Offensive Player of the Year.

Mainord began his coaching career at his alma mater, spending six seasons at Tarleton State from 1999-2004 where he played baseball before joining the football program as a student assistant coach.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in health and sports science in 2000 and his master’s degree in education in 2001. Mainord and his wife, Tiffany, have a daughter, Maecee, and a son, Davis.
