North Texas Volleyball Falls In Five

Denton (The Snake Pit) (10/13/01)- The North Texas volleyball team (9-10, 4-4) had a three-match winning streak snapped Saturday night against Arkansas State, dropping a 3-2 decision to the Lady Indians by scores of 23-30, 23-30, 30-20, 30-25 and 11-15.
The Mean Green couldn’t get much going to start the match, hitting jus .000 for the first game and .051 for the second. After dropping the first two games, North Texas turned its game around with a .306 third-game and .308 fourth-game attack percentage. The two back-to-back wins gave the Mean Green the momentum heading into the final game and it was able to jump out to a 4-1 advantage over the Lady Indians. ASU rallied, however, recording a match-high .421 hitting percentage on its way to the victory.
North Texas had a hitting percentage of .172 for the entire match in comparison to ASU’s .222. The Mean Green was able to capitalize on 14 service aces, but suffered 10 service errors and eight reception errors.
Corina Marginas (So.; OH; Brasov, Romania) and Stephanie Connors (So.; OH; San Antonio, Tex.) both recorded double-figure kills and Kristin Sheppard posted her 10th double-double of the season to lead the Mean Green. Marginas registered her sixth 20-plus kill performance of the year with a match-high 21 kills and Connors equalled her season-high in kills with 11. Sheppard had 47 assists and a team-best 15 digs.
Arkansas State had four players post double-figure kills, led by Tessa Milikan’s 17.
Coming away with a split in its two Sun Belt Conference cross-divisional matches this weekend, the Mean Green now has a 1-2 record against East Division foes. North Texas will square off against its third consecutive East Division opponent in Florida International this Friday in a 6:30 p.m. match in Miami. The Mean Green will close out next weeks action in a 1 p.m. match at Miami on Sunday.
