The first two games and the second two games looked like two completely different matches. After playing from behind for most of the first two games, the Mean Green was able to get a lead and hold onto it in the third game. North Texas grabbed a 10-9 lead in the game and never relinquished it as it went on to the three-point victory. Despite dropping the fourth game, the Mean Green actually held a 22-20 advantage at one point and posted its best hitting percentage of the match at .244.
“I thought we made some good adjustments in games three and four,” said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. “TCU is a good team. They are big, extremely quick and we can play with them. This is what we needed heading into the Sun Belt Conference tournament.”
North Texas trailed by just one point, 14-15, midway through the first game, but SMU was able to put together a 15-2 run to finish the game. With the score tied 9-9 in the second game, North Texas was once again plagued by a big SMU run. The Mustangs went on a 9-2 run at that point and closed out the first two games with a .358 hitting percentage to the Mean Green’s .074.
Sophomore Corina Marginas (OH; Brasov, Romania) led North Texas offensively with a match-high 25 kills. Brieanne Fowler had a career and match-high 23 digs and was one of two Mean Green players to register a double-double with 15 kills as well. Kristin Sheppard (So.; S; Texarkana, Tex.) had a team-best 45 assists and 12 digs.
North Texas will play at New Mexico State on Friday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. CST.
