DENTON (12/16/02) Senior guard Chris Davis scored a season-high 25 points and pulled down a career-best 15 rebounds to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team (4-3) to an 88-41 victory over St. Edward’s (2-7) at the Super Pit on Monday night.
Davis collected his second double-double of the season and fourth of his career to pace the North Texas attack. Michael DeGrate also recorded a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds, both season highs. Jermaine Green narrowly missed his third double-double this season with nine rebounds and 12 points.
The game was almost three minutes old before North Texas scored the contest’s first points, but took control after that and never looked back. The Mean Green jumped ahead 18-4 midway through the first half and carried a 37-17 advantage into the break. North Texas didn’t let St. Edward’s get closer than 18 points in the second half and held its largest lead of the game at 48 points (88-40) with 1:06 remaining in the contest.
St. Edward’s 41 points were the fewest allowed by North Texas this season. The Hilltoppers connected on just 14 of 59 shots from the floor, leading to a season-high 61 rebounds by the Mean Green. NT grabbed 21 offensive rebounds, just eight less than St. Edward’s 29 total rebounds.
North Texas will play at Tennessee Tech on Saturday (6 p.m. CST) in the first of back-to-back road games before returning to the Super Pit for a Dec. 28 game against Texas A&M-Commerce.
