SAN MARCOS, Tex. (8/30/02) The North Texas women’s volleyball team (1-1) kicked off the 2002 season Friday at the Bobcat Classic, splitting its first two matches of the tournament.
The Mean Green took tournament host Southwest Texas State (1-0) to a full five games in its first match, but lost the deciding game. North Texas rebounded, however, to sweep Air Force (0-2) in its afternoon match and even its record to 1-1 on the young season.
“I think we had a lot of nerves on the court today,” said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. “We didn’t really execute things that we have executed for the past two weeks of practice, but I think this will be an experience building weekend. We are trying to make sure we have the right combination of players on the court at the right time by using different lineups and putting people in different places.”
The Mean Green handed Air Force 30-28, 30-25 and 30-23 setbacks to cruise to the victory. Corina Marginas led the Mean Green attack against the Falcons, recording a double-double with 15 kills and 16 digs. Freshman Brittany Gregory also had a solid outing with nine kills, three assists, two service aces and two blocks. Kristin Sheppard tallied a match-high 35 assists.
North Texas will face Mississippi State at 9 a.m. and Southern Illinois at 5 p.m. Saturday in the tournaments final day of play.
