DENTON (9/17/02) - The North Texas women’s volleyball team (4-9) claimed its first-ever victory over TCU (6-5) in convincing fashion Tuesday night, handing the Horned Frogs 30-17, 30-19 and 30-7 losses in a shut-out victory.
North Texas’ offense gave TCU trouble the entire match and actually ended the night with a blistering .462 attack percentage. Corina Marginas (Jr.; OH; Brasov, Romania) and Tanya Samples (Sr.; MB; Nocona, Tex.) inflicted most of the punishment as each finished with double-figure kills and at least a .500 hitting percentage. The Mean Green stepped up defensively as well, holding the Horned Frogs to a .039 hitting percentage, digging 52 balls and blocking six TCU attacks.
"We went into attack mode tonight," said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. "Kristin (Sheppard) did a good job of distributing the ball to the entire team and we were able to put the ball down when we needed to."
North Texas’ 30-7 game-three win marked its largest margin of victory since the scoring was changed to 30-point games. The outing marked North Texas’ second consecutive victory and was its second shut out of the season.
"This is a big win for us," said Headrick. "We have been building up to this point in every game we’ve played. We want to establish a strong home court presence and have opponents come in here and see what kind of potential we have."
Samples, who finished the contest with a season-high .714 attack percentage, got North Texas rolling to start the match as she pounded six kills in the first game. She ended the match with 11 kills and only one error in 14 attempts. Marginas posted a .500 hitting percentage and wound up with a match-high 21 kills. Kristin Sheppard (Jr.; S; Texarkana, Tex.) directed the Mean Green offensive attack very efficiently as she piled up 42 assists for a 14.0 average per game.
TCU was led by Dominika Szabo’s nine kills and eight digs. TCU only hit above .100 the first game and actually posted a -.103 attack percentage in the final game.
North Texas will look to extend its winning streak to three games at Prairie View A&M on Thursday. The Mean Green then returns home to host Nicholls State on Saturday at 7 p.m.
