AUSTIN, Tex. (9/3/02) The North Texas volleyball team (2-4) suffered a 3-0 setback Tuesday night at the hands of a tough Texas team (3-1) that had 1,130 fans backing it at Gregory Gymnasium.
Texas issued the Mean Green, which struggled to get an offensive attack mounted all night, its only sweep of the season thus far. North Texas’ hitting percentage was just .067 for the entire match as the Longhorns captured 30-22, 30-21 and 30-17 victories.
Corina Marginas (Jr.; OH; Brasov, Romania), North Texas’ all-time kill leader, was held to a single-digit kill total for the first time this season with just five kills on the night. Brieanne Fowler (Jr.; OH; Odessa, Tex.) had a team-high seven kills, while Marginas and Kristin Sheppard (Jr.; S; Texarkana, Tex.) led the Mean Green defensively with seven digs each.
Texas was able to hold the Mean Green to a sub .100 hitting percentage each game. The Longhorns, however, hit at least .244 for each game and finished the match with a .283 hitting percentage.
Mira Topic led the Longhorns offense with a 20-kill performance and Caron Blotch tallied a match-high 39 assists.
North Texas will be back in action this weekend at the Bank of Fayetteville Invitational, hosted by the University of Arkansas. The Mean Green will play Arkansas and Southern Mississippi on Friday at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
