Mean Green Falls 74-62 At New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, La. (1/23/03) The North Texas men’s basketball team (6-11, 1-4) suffered a 74-62 setback against New Orleans (10-7, 3-3) Thursday night in a Sun Belt Conference West Division game at Lakefront Arena.
Trailing by eight at halftime, North Texas cut the lead to four twice in the first seven minutes of the second half. However, UNO used a 9-2 run from 12:57 to 10:47 to turn a 45-41 lead into a 54-43 advantage. North Texas battled the Privateers the rest of the way, but couldn’t get any closer than six.
The Mean Green shot 43 percent from the field and gave up just four more rebounds to UNO, but was hurt by 18 turnovers. The Privateers shot 45 percent while committing 11 turnovers.
The game’s first seven minutes saw the Mean Green take a 10-9 lead, but the Privateers went on 14-0 run over the next three minutes to open up a 23-10 advantage. UNO held on to the double-figure lead, which reached as much as 15, until Chris Davis ended the first half’s scoring with two free throws that brought the score to 34-26 at the 1:10 mark.
Davis and Michael DeGrate each scored 12 points to lead the North Texas offense. DeGrate also finished with seven rebounds while Davis narrowly missed a double-double with nine boards.
Hector Romero recorded a double-double with 28 points and 10 rebounds to pace the New Orleans attack. Victory Brown also finished with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 boards.
North Texas will close out a two-game road swing Saturday against South Alabama at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on KWRD, 100.7 FM.
