“March Madness” is coming to the Super Pit in 2005
For the first time since 1989, the University of North Texas will host a post-season conference basketball tournament. The 2005 Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference post-season tournament will take place March 4-8. This is a huge event for the University, the city of Denton and for the men’s and women’s basketball programs at North Texas! There are several reasons why community-wide support is needed:
Economic Impact
A total of 22 men’s and women’s basketball teams from the Sun Belt Conference will meet in Denton for a chance to win the Aeropostale SBC post-season tournament and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. That will be over 300 student-athletes, coaches, trainers, mascots, bands and cheerleaders converging on Denton! That doesn’t include the thousands of fans coming in from the nine different states represented as well. They will be staying in our hotels, shopping in our stores and leaving their dollars behind! The best part is that this signature event is not costing the City of Denton one dime.
Outstanding Exposure
“March Madness” has become one of the best-known sports phrases of the last three decades. Millions of college basketball fans turn their attention to the NCAA National Championship each season. ESPN will provide coverage of the tournament at the Super Pit, putting the University of North Texas and the City of Denton on center-stage.

The drama and excitement of championship basketball in our own backyard - that’s what you get with the Aeropostale Sun Belt Conference Tournament coming to the Super Pit. This event will offer five straight days of major college basketball in one of the best venues in the nation.

For North Texas fans, this is the ultimate opportunity to help the Mean Green men and women advance to the NCAA Tournament. The men’s team punched the ticket to the Big Dance in 1988 when the conference tournament was hosted at the Super Pit.
