Watson Hits Game-Winning Three In Mean Green Victory

DENTON (12/22/04) North Texas sophomore Calvin Watson hit a game-winning three-pointer to lift the Mean Green to a 69-62 victory over Southeast Missouri State on Wednesday night at the Super Pit in a non-conference men’s basketball game.
Watson’s three-pointer gave the Mean Green a 62-59 lead, breaking the seventh tie of the second half. With a full-court press, the Mean Green scored seven of the last 10 points of the game to seal the win. All seven points were from the free-throw line.
Neither team led by more than five points in the second half until the final minute.The Indians took their first lead of the game, 26-25, at the start of the second half after
Brett Hale gave SEMU a five-point lead twice, 37-32 and 39-34, midway through the second half. Hale was one of three Indians in double figures with 13 points. The momentum swung back to the Mean Green down the stretch as Isaac Hines pushed the NT lead to five, 54-49, with a free throw at
Freshman forward Quincy Williams finished with 14 points to share team-high honors and to post a new season and career high. Williams connected on 6-of-9 field goals in a career-high 27 minutes of playing time and was one of four Mean Green players scoring in double figures.
Junior forward Jeffrey Simpson registered a new season and career high in points with 10. He also matched in career best with five rebounds. Senior Leonard Hopkins added 14 points and has scored in double figures every game this season.
Watson, who dropped in both of the Mean Green’s three-pointers, has hit multiple three-point shots in eight of nine games this season and in 16 of 29 career games. The sophomore finished with 12 points.
