Mean Green Basketball Closes Out 2004 With Two Games

The North Texas men's and women's basketball teams close out the 2004 year for Mean Green Athletics with two games on Thursday night. The men play Tennessee-Martin at 5 p.m. at the Dr. Pepper Classic Tournament in Chattanooga, while the women host Texas-Arlington at 7 p.m. in the Super Pit. Every regular-season men's game can be heard live on KWRD (100.7 FM) in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, and the women can be heard on KNTU (88.1 FM.
The men (6-4) had its three-game losing streak snapped on Wednesday night with a 72-65 loss to Chattanooga. Despite a tough shooting night, senior guard Leonard Hopkins scored 21 points to become the 16th player in school history to record 1,000 points in a career.
North Texas is off to its best start since 1980-81 and its success has been due to a complete team effort. Nine of NT’s 12 players have scored in double figures this season and seven have done it multiple times.The Mean Green has three players averaging double-figure points and seven averaging at least five points.
The women returns home to face UTA in the final game of the 2004 calander season.The Mean Green has only two more non-conference games before beginning Sun Belt Conference play. Despite coming off a 70-58 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, the Mean Green has won three of its last five games.
This will mark the 39th meeting between the two teams and it is also the longest rivalry in terms of games for North Texas. The series between the two schools is tied at 19-19. North Texas won the last meeting in 2001 over UTA 85-58 in Denton. North Texas is 9-10 against UTA in games played at the Super Pit. The last UTA win in Denton was a 54-43 win on February 3, 1996.
