DENTON ( 2/21/04 )- Sophomore forward Jamie Armstrong powered the North Texas (10-15, 6-7) women’s basketball team past Louisiana-Lafayette (13-12, 7-6) 74-70 with 17 points and a career-high 13 rebounds at the Super Pit. The win keeps the Mean Green in third place in the Sun Belt Conference West Division and snaps their three-game losing streak.
“Overall I was pleased with our defensive effort. We had somewhat of a lapse down the stretch, but we hung on for the win. I thought our team responded well after we loss the lead midway through the second half. Jamie Armstrong hit a shot that keyed a 12-0 run for us,” said North Texas head coach Tina Slinker. “We are doing a better job protecting the ball and our turnovers are down and that obviously helps us”.
North Texas had an early 14-9 lead midway through the first half and then exploded with a 16-2 run to make it 30-11 with 5:17 remaining in the half. UL Lafayette trimmed the Mean Green lead to 35-22 at the half.
The Ragin Cajuns opened the second half up with a 12-3 run to cut the Mean Green lead to 38-34 with 14:54 left. Louisiana-Lafayette continued the comeback and took a 44-43 lead on a 3-pointer by Bernette Tolston at the 10:20 mark of the second half.
North Texas responded with a 17-2 to run over the next five minutes to extend their lead to 60-46 with 4:11 remaining. The Ragin Cajuns made one final run to cut the lead the Mean Green lead to four points at 69-65 with 30 seconds left, but Jill Medlock iced the game with three free throws down the stretch.
North Texas continues their five-game home stand on February 26 against the New Orleans Privateers.
