Mean Green Volleyball Finishes Regular Season With Five Straight Wins

LAFAYETTE, La. (11/13/05) The North Texas volleyball team (14-17, 8-5) picked up its fifth consecutive victory on Sunday, defeating Sun Belt Conference opponent Louisiana-Lafayette (5-20, 2-10) 32-30, 30-24, 25-30, 31-29 in its regular-season finale.

The Mean Green wrapped up the regular season with 14 victories, seven more than it had for all of last season, and an 8-5 Sun Belt Conference Record. North Texas finished second in the SBC West Division for the third time in the last four years. Denver won the division with an 8-4 mark.

Mean Green head coach Cassie Headrick won her 80^th match at North Texas, moving her into a tie with Vickie Guy as the fastest coach in school history to reach 80 victories. Headrick is just three wins shy of the school record for most victories by a head coach.

North Texas had four players record double-figure kills against the Ragin’ Cajuns, led by Tara Hooser with 21. Hooser posted a career-high 22 kills in the Mean Green’s prior match and has registered double-figure kills each of the last six matches.

The Mean Green recorded 62 kills on a .157 attack percentage, while the Ragin’ Cajuns posted 68 kills on a .167 hitting percentage. North Texas picked up its first victory of the season when registering a lower hitting percentage than its opponent.

The Ragin’ Cajuns also had eight more digs than the Mean Green, but North Texas recorded two more blocks and three more service aces.

Joining Hooser with double-figure kills were Brooke Engel (11), Katy Prokof (11) and Catherine Coffey (10). Prokof recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 16 digs as well, while sophomore setter Ashley Bass picked up her seventh double-double with 51 assists and 16 digs.

Jessica Hulsebosch recorded a team-high 25 digs, making her the first player in North Texas history to surpass 500 digs in a single season with 523 to her credit.

North Texas will next compete in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, scheduled for November 17-19 in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
