The Mean Green (4-3) is now 4-0 at home in the Super Pit and 2-0 in the series against the Rams.
“I thought we did a good job of staying focused after we got that big lead in the first half," said head coach Johnny Jones. "Sometimes in games like this, it’s hard to maintain your focus and intensity level. But we stayed in our offense and continued to concentrate on the defensive end. It was a good night for us. We played well and continued to improve."
The Mean Green limited Angelo State to 20 points in the first half, which is the fewest allowed in a half by a North Texas team since holding UT-Pemian Basin to 20 first-half points in 2004-05.
The Mean Green set a number of season highs, including points (111), field-goals made (45), field-goal attempts (85), field-goal percentage (52.9) and rebounds (62). NT posted conference season highs for field goals made and rebounds. The 111 points are the most scored during the Johnny Jones era, surpassing its 109 scored against Hardin-Simmons on Dec. 6, 2003.
Sophomore Michael Sturns led the team in scoring with 17 points in 18 minutes of play. Justin Howerton and Harold Edwards also came off the bench to score in double figures with season highs of 13 and 10 points, respectively. Calvin Watson was the only starter in double figures with 12 tallies. All 14 dressed players scored for the first time this season.
The Mean Green extended its lead to as many as 50 points, 94-44, after two free throws by Edwards with 7:48 left in the game.
