Men's Basketball Falls To South Alabama

DENTON (2/26/05) North Texas led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but South Alabama went on a 28-9 run to take a 91-72 victory in men’s basketball action on Saturday night at the Super Pit.

The Mean Green (14-13, 6-9 Sun Belt) finished the regular season in a tie for fourth in the Sun Belt Conference West Division and will be the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament.

After a dunk by junior Jeffrey Simpson, North Texas took its third 10-point lead of the second half, 54-44, with 14:12 left in the game. The Jaguars went on a 17-7 run over the next three minutes to tie the game at 59-59. Richard Law then scored with a layup to give USA its first lead since late in the first half and the Jaguars never looked back.

South Alabama used a 28-9 run to take a 19-point lead, 87-69, with a minute left in the game. The Jaguars shot 67.9 percent in the second half, hitting 19-of-28 field goals.

North Texas shot 52 percent in the first half and entered ahead at the break, 41-35.

Senior Leonard Hopkins led the Mean Green in double figures with 23 points. Senior Marqus Mitchell followed with 14 points, including three three-pointers.

North Texas will play either Middle Tennessee/Arkansas State in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, depending on the outcome of MT’s game versus Florida International on Monday. NT will play on Friday, March 4 at 5:30 at the Super Pit.
