FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (8/27/05) -- The North Texas volleyball team (0-3) wrapped up play at the Arkansas Invitational on Saturday, falling 3-1 (30-26, 30-32, 23-30, 16-30) to Memphis at Barnhill Arena in its last of three matches at the tournament.
The Mean Green grabbed an early one-game lead and narrowly missed a game-two victory that would have put it in control heading out of the break, but the Tigers were able to escape with two-point win in the second contest and seize the momentum. The Mean Green hit .167 and .257 in games one and two, respectively, but saw its hitting percentage drop below .100 for the next two games combined.
The Tigers hit at least .256 in three of the four games to finish with a .287 attack percentage, while the Mean Green posted a season-high .147 percentage for the entire match.
Sophomore’s Katy Prokof and Brooke Engel led NT offensively, combining to record half of the Mean Green’s season-high 50 kills. Prokof posted a season-high 13 kills, the most by any Mean Green player so far in the young season, while Engel recorded a career-best 12 kills on a team-high .333 hitting percentage. Prokof led the Mean Green in kills for the entire tournament with 29.
North Texas was once again led on the defensive side by sophomore Jessica Hulsebosch, who tallied a team-high 17 digs to finish the tournament with 50 total digs for a 5.0 average per game. Freshman Catherine Coffey proved to be NT’s most dangerous weapon at the net, leading the team in blocks each match, including four against the Tigers.
Heidi Johnson and Ashley Bass saw action at setter against Memphis with Johnson posting a team-high 24 assists in the match.
North Texas returns to action August 31 with a 7 p.m. match at SMU. The Mean Green will also play Baylor and McNeese State on Sept. 3 in Waco, Texas.
