Mean Green Volleyball Wins Sun Belt Opener Over South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. (9/30/05) -- The North Texas volleyball team (7-11, 1-0) rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat South Alabama (6-10, 0-3) 29-31, 30-21, 26-30, 30-19, 15-8 on Sunday at Jaguar Gym in its Sun Belt Conference opener.
The Mean Green, which played its first five-game match of the season, trailed 11-4 in the third game before coming back to claim an 11-point win and force a fifth and deciding game. With the score tied 8-8 in the finale, the Mean Green rolled off the games last seven points to secure the win.
North Texas improved to 5-1 in Sun Belt openers under head coach Cassie Headrick, won its third straight road match and has now defeated the Jaguars in seven consecutive matches. The Mean Green has won seven of its last 10 matches and tied its victory total for all of last year.
Sophomore Katy Prokof led the Mean Green with a career-high 24 kills and achieved her fourth double-double of the season with 14 digs as well. Prokof’s 24 kills were also the most by any North Texas player since the 2003 season.
Prokof was one of four North Texas players to record double-figure kills, joined by Tara Hooser with a career-tying 19, Brooke Engel with 10 and Erica Wendell with 10. Sophomore Ashley Bass posted a career-high 62 assists, which is also the most by any Mean Green player this season. Sophomore Jessica Hulsebosch collected a match-high 21 digs, marking the fifth time this year she has eclipsed 20 digs in a match.
North Texas recorded a .297 attack percentage, 74 kills and 69 assists, all season highs. South Alabama finished with 68 kills on a .179 attack percentage.
North Texas will close out play this weekend at Troy at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
