DENTON (1/26/06) Junior Kendrick Davis scored a career-high 27 points to lead the North Texas men’s basketball team to an 84-77 victory against Troy on Thursday night in the Super Pit.
The Mean Green (12-6, 5-3) has won eight of its last 10 games and defeated
"I thought this was a well-played game tonight," said head coach Johnny Jones. "Troy was probably the hottest team in the conference after beating Western Kentucky and Louisiana-Lafayette by over 20 points each. They are a great shooting team. We had success against them tonight because we were patient. We did not take a lot of quick shots. Tonight, we took what they gave us, which was the three-point shot."
"We have very capable guys shooting the three," said Jones. "That was evident tonight. Isaac Hines is one of the top three-point shooters in the conference. Lionel Brown is very capable also. Kendrick Davis is always a threat, and Calvin Watson can down the long ball also."
The Mean Green hit 9-of-18 three attempts in the first half, including four in a 16-3 run that broke open the game.
Troy responded with a 19-8 run that cut the North Texas lead to 10 points, 71-61, with 5:13 left on the clock. The Trojans finally cut the advantage to single digits, 77-68, for the first time since the first half after a three-pointer by Todd Martin.
The Mean Green was able to respond with baskets and rebounds down the stretch.
Brown and Isaac Hines joined
Senior Jeffrey Simpson was two points shy of a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds.
