Psychology 1000 is a Learning Strategies course designed to help student athletes understand the process of learning as well as the strategies that are associated with success in school, sports, relationships, business and life. Based on contemporary cognitive psychology and educational theory and research, this course helps student athletes understand how they learn and process information, how to select study strategies that are consistent with their personality and learning styles, and how to regulate their academic, interpersonal, athletic and health-related behaviors. This course also gives student athletes the opportunity to examine their choice of major and career in relation to their values, interests, skills/abilities, personality and intelligences. The course is designed specifically for student athletes and thus addresses some of their unique needs and experiences.
Psychology 1000 is part of the UNT Athletic Department’s strategic plan to help student athletes make a smooth transition to school, be successful in their classes, select a major and graduate on schedule, and establish themselves in their careers. In addition to Psychology 1000, student athletes are supported, both academically and personally, through the department’s academic center and CHAMPS/Life Skills program. Taken together these athlete specific and other general student programs and services on the UNT campus provide a comprehensive package of services to help student athletes be successful personally and academically.
