Volleyball Dominates For Upset Sweep Over FIU

DENTON, Texas (10/05/07) - The North Texas volleyball team pulled off easily the biggest upset in the Sun Belt this season, handily sweeping Florida International, 30-26, 30-26, 30-25.

The Mean Green (6-13, 2-3 SBC West) overpowered the Golden Panthers (11-3, 6-1 SBC East) from the start, posting a through-the-roof attack percentage of .402 the seventh-best mark in school history.

“We came out really focused tonight and everyone did their job perfectly,” said North Texas head coach Cassie Headrick. “When everyone on this team comes to play, you get results like this.”

Only two other Sun Belt squads had managed to win a single game in six matches against the eastern division leaders, and the Golden Panthers only previous losses came to perennial powers Notre Dame and No. 10 California.

Katy Prokof was the North Texas spark plug, notching 16 kills and a three service aces, both team highs. The senior posted three of the Mean Green’s final five points, including the game-clinching kill.

Brooke Engel got the FIU monkey off of her back, landing her first-ever service aces against the Golden Panthers. The senior, who leads the nation in scoring aces for the second straight year, scored a pair of aces tonight on top of 10 kills, and has now scored an ace against every Sun Belt Conference team in her career.

The North Texas block kept the Golden Panthers off balance all night. Catherine Coffey had four assisted blocks and 10 kills, and Heather Maddox’s solo block late in game three put FIU on the ropes for good.

Maddox also dished out 47 assists, a high this season for a three-game match.

North Texas returns to action on Sunday against Florida Atlantic at the Mean Green Volleyball Center at 1 p.m.
