DENTON, Texas (1/17/08) The Super Pit will host a double header tonight as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams will take the court against the New Orleans Privateers in a Sun Belt Conference battle that will pit one of the conference’s best players against a sturdy Mean Green defense.

The Mean Green women are coming off one of their biggest wins of the season over Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday. North Texas is looking to even its Sun Belt Conference record at 3-3 with a win while New Orleans is coming off a three-point overtime loss to South Alabama.

North Texas women lead the series with the Privateers 11-6. The Mean Green has won the six of the past seven meetings against New Orleans. The series dates back to 1979 when North Texas beat New Orleans by 21-points on the road, 85-64. The Mean Green is 6-2 at home against New Orleans however the Privateers won at the Super Pit last season 69-65.

The University of New Orleans men’s basketball team has won four strait against the Mean Green (12-4, 3-2) but North Texas looks to defend its flawless record at home against Sun Belt Player of the Year Bo McCalebb and the Privateers (12-5, 2-3).

Heading into tonight’s match up UNO’s McCalebb is just 11 points shy becoming the league’s all-time leading scorer. McCalebb, who has 2,309 career points, currently ranks 12^th in the nation in scoring with 21.9 points per game. Former South Florida standout Charlie Bradley (2,319 points) has held the record since 1985.

“He’s a phenomenal player,” Jones said. “The one thing is so prevent him from having a phenomenal night.”

New Orleans holds a 12-5 mark against North Texas in a series that dates back to 1976. However, in the last four meetings the Privateers have narrowly escaped by a combined margin of 10 points.

“It’s a dogfight every time we play New Orleans,” head coach Johnny Jones said. “It always comes down to possession and they make some tough plays late in the game. But at some point it’s our turn and it’s our time.”

Tonight’s action is scheduled to tip off at 5:05 PM with the men starting at 7 pm and can be heard on the Mean Green Radio Network.
