TULSA, Okla. (9/05/08) The North Texas volleyball team couldn’t handle a streaking Tulsa squad, falling to the Golden Hurricane, 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-17), at the Oral Roberts Classic on Friday.
Despite a match-high 10 kills from Salah Schoenecke, North Texas (1-3) had trouble landing its attacks on the defending Conference USA champions. The Mean Green committed 20 attack errors and 11 service errors in the match, compared to eight and seven for Tulsa (4-1).
Schoenecke dazzled the crowd at Cooper Aerobics Center with six digs, two service aces and a block to go with her double digit kill performance.
The Mean Green began the match soundly with a 5-3 lead on the strength of two Roxana Casvean kills. Tulsa responded with a quick 11-4 run to spoil the first set for North Texas. NT gave 12 points back to the Golden Hurricane in the first set in the form of attack errors, compared to just three for Tulsa.
Down 22-18 in the second set, North Texas bounced back with a 3-1 run that made it too close for comfort for Tulsa. The Mean Green got kills from Casvean, Brittani Youman and Schoenecke to force a Tulsa timeout at 23-21. Despite hitting .290 as a team in the second frame, the Golden Hurricane was able to regroup at the break and managed to shut the door.
Tulsa opened the third frame with a 13-4 streak and never looked back to seal the sweep.
Chelsea Cook earned the first starts of her career in sets two and three, and responded with a pair of blocks. The former Texas Woman’s basketball standout also added two kills and a dig.
Setter Marelle Lepmets just missed her second straight match with at least 30 assists. The junior tallied 27 assists on the Golden Hurricane after piling up 52 last weekend versus UT Arlington.
North Texas will take on Fordham and Oral Roberts on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively. Live stats are available through the Oral Roberts Website.
