GAME NOTES / QUOTES
The Mean Green’s 92-point outburst in the win vs. Louisiana-Lafayette was a season high, surpassing the previous best of 88 points, which they had reached twice. It was the most points scored by the Mean Green since a 97-70 victory over Texas A&M-International last season (12-28-07)
As a team, the Mean Green dropped in 10-of-17 shots from three-point range against the Cajuns, just the third time this season that UNT has connected on 10 or more three-pointers in a game. NT’s shooting percentage from behind the arc (59%) is the second-highest this season, trailing only the 61% (11-18) they shot against Louisiana-Lafayette’s in the season’s first meeting between the two teams back in December.
The announced home crowd of 4,053 is the largest of the season.
Tristan Thompson paced the Mean Green with 24 points the fifth time this season he’s scored more than 20 points in a game. Thompson connected on 3-of-3 shots from three-point distance and hit a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line. His 13 FT attempts and 13 made FTs are both season highs for a Mean Green player this season. Thompson scored 27 against Louisiana in Lafayette earlier in the season.
Thompson’s 24 points marked the 13th game this season in which he’s scored in double digits.
Thompson’s perfect effort at the free throw line was just one of four UNT players to not miss at the line. Eric Tramiel (4-4), Dominique Johnson (2-2) and Adam McCoy (2-2) also shot 1.000 from the line.
Adam McCoy shot 5-of-7 from the floor, including a 3-of-5 effort from three-point range to finish with 15 points in the win. It was his sixth double-figure game of the season and the ninth game this season in which he’s connected on at least two three-point FGs.
Tramiel and Johnson also finished in double figures with 10 points each. Tramiel was perfect from the free throw line (4-4) while Johnson was perfect both at the FT line (2-2) and from three-point range (2-2).
For Tramiel, it was the sixth consecutive game in which he’s scored in double figures.
Johnson dished out a game-high seven assists, tying his season high.
Justin Howerton scored eight points off the bench, his second-best outing of the season. He scored a season-high 10 points in the season opener back in November.
Antwone Matlock, a walk-on who had seen action in just two games this season, played seven minutes in the second half and failed to score.
The Mean Green led at halftime by a 54-26 margin, with the 54 points being the most first-half points scored by the Mean Green this season. The previous high mark was 44 points, which they accomplished four times.
Head Coach
Johnny Jones Quotes
“We thought this was a great opportunity to kind of right the ship after a couple of tough setbacks on the road. We needed, and got great balance tonight from everyone. It was a good offensive night for us, but an even better defensive outing. Louisiana was coming off a game wherein they put up 90 points, including 14 makes from behind the three point line, against a very good Florida International team.”
“We clicked on all cylinders tonight. I was pleased with our inside game with Tramiel (Eric) and Odufuwa (George) along with Harold Stewart, Kedric Hogans and Justin Howerton. We were equally successful from our guards with the play of Tristan Thompson, Dominque Johnson, Adam McCoy and Collin Dennis going 10 of 13 from behind the three-point line.”
“I was disappointed in the way the finished the game as it relates to turnovers, but again this was a good night for us in front a very loud and enthusiastic crowd tonight.”
