DENTON, Texas (3/02/09) Arguably the hottest player in the country right now, Adam McCoy, was named the Sun Belt Conference’s Player of the Week on Monday after scorching his way to a 27.5 point per game average in his last two outings.
McCoy’s efforts lifted the Mean Green to a pair of road wins at Arkansas State and Denver, where only one other SBC squad had won this year. The senior helped North Texas snag its highest-ever SBC Tournament seed (fourth) with 29 and 26 point efforts on 18-of-27 (66.7 percent) shooting.
The Dallas native was unstoppable beyond the arc, nailing 10-of-17 (58.8 percent) from deep. He also posted a perfect 9-of-9 performance from the free throw line. McCoy started the week with a career-best 29 points at ASU and then lit up Denver for 26.
Unstoppable of late, McCoy is averaging 22.8 points per game on 59.7 percent shooting over his last five outings.
McCoy and the rest of the Mean Green are heating up at just the right time, as fourth seeded North Texas will play host to No. 13 Florida Atlantic in Sun Belt Tournament First-Round action on Wednesday. Tip off from the Super Pit is scheduled for 7 p.m. The winner moves on to Hot Springs, Ark., to face the winner of No. 5 Middle Tennessee and No. 12 Arkansas State.
