DENTON, Texas (3/31/09) The Mean Green men’s and women’s basketball teams celebrated a couple of outstanding seasons at the annual North Texas Basketball Banquet on Tuesday night at the Gateway Center.
The sold-out affair was hosted by local sports personality and Mean Green play-by-play man George Dunham, and featured dignitaries from around the university community as well as NT coaches and players.
First-year women’s head coach Shanice Stephens handed out the women’s awards, starting with the Academic Excellence award to Mimi Goodman. Torrian Timms was given the Coaches Award and Jeanee’ Thompson earned this year’s Most Improved Player. Kelli Buckley took home Defensive MVP honors, and freshman Mansa El was named the squad’s Most Valuable Player.
On the men’s side, head coach Johnny Jones celebrated a third straight 20-win season by honoring four seniors who leave the program as the winningest players in North Texas history; Adam McCoy, Justin Howerton, Collin Dennis and Harold Stewart. Howerton and Stewart were apart of 77 career wins and are two of just five players in NT history to be apart of four straight season of .500 or better, which also earned them Special Achievement Awards from coach Jones.
Jones also handed out Statistical Leader awards to Dominique Johnson (assists), Josh White (free throw percentage) and Eric Tramiel (field goal percentage, rebounds and points).
Adam McCoy was an easy choice for Most Improved Player, and Tramiel’s play earned him Most Valuable Player honors.
