Football Preview - Wide Receiver Sam Roberson

Height: 6-4
Class: Sophomore
Signed: In 2007 from Somerville High School
2008 Key Stat: 6-4. When you play down the line from a do-it-all receiver like Casey Fitzgerald you take all the opportunities you can get, and that’s what the 6-foot 4-inch bruiser did as a freshman in ’08. Roberson’s numbers aren’t all that impressive (12 catches for 76 yards), but the imposing receiver is thought to have as big of an “upside” as any player suiting up for North Texas.
Why he will start: Chief, as he is known around the huddle, is a large target that will benefit greatly from a move to inside receiver. As the biggest receiver in the Mean Green arsenal, he presents a towering target for quarterback Riley Dodge and can be counted on in traffic.
Why he won’t start: Roberson is the only returning receiver that will start fall drills working with the first-team offense. Barring an injury, the big-man is expected to fit in nicely in the slot.
Dont' forget: Don’t let his limited touches in ’08 fool you, Roberson has the tools and the confidence to excel for the Mean Green. He started six games as a freshman and has four multi-catch games under his belt, not to mention all-state credentials in high school.
Overall: With coach Todd Dodge looking to balance the passing attack this year, look for Roberson in the slot to pick up plenty of third-down receptions that keep the chains moving. The move to inside receiver is a no-brainer, and will help put the Mean Green on the field with the most talented overall wide-receiving corps since Dodge arrived in Denton.
