Coach Dodge touched on a lot of topics today during his live chat but we got to stick around for a post-chat-chat. A couple of things to keep in mind while thumbing through this. The newcomers, i.e. transfers are not included so don’t get worried if you don’t see any of the names.
Two other things of note. Troy Franklin has switched back over to the offensive side of the ball and is an O-Lineman again. Probably the best fit in my opinion. Franklin was forced over to the defensive side of the ball last year because of numbers, or lack thereof at the defensive line spot. Now that the Mean Green has plenty of bodies over there, he can move back to his natural position where he was a two-time all-state selection at. (Correction, Franklin was a two-time all-state player at defensive line, but played both ways at Celina)
I never liked Franklin on the defensive side of the ball. He's gonna be buried on the depth chart at the moment at offensive line, but before too long I think you will see him getting on the field.
Ira Smith is still going to see some action at cornerback, but he’s got a real shot at the starting strong safety spot. Going into the camp, he’s backing up Royce Hill at cornerback and barring something catastrophic, Hill’s the starter. However with Smith being so versatile, I think his chances at the safety spot are pretty good.
The best battle besides the one at safety is going to be on the offensive line. Gabe Hollivay and Kelvin Drake are neck and neck for the starting left guard position heading into the camp. The question is can Hollivay, a senior, outduel Drake, who is coming off an ankle injury that sidelined him all of last season. Drake was an all-conference selection before the injury and during the spring looked like the he never lost a step. But spring time isn’t the fall and it’s going to be a war in the trenches for that starting spot.
Without further delay here is the official two-deep.
