Football Falls To Arkansas State 24-19

DENTON, Texas (10/9/10) - Lance Dunbar rushed for 105 yards in the Mean Green's 24-19 loss to Arkansas State on Saturday night at Fouts Field.
The Mean Green falls to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the Sun Belt. ASU improves to 2-4 and 2-2 in the conference. The Mean Green has lost the last six games against the Red Wolves.
Dunbar rushed for 105 yards, his 11th career 100-yard rushing game in 14 starts. He scored the Mean Green's only touchdown of the game. The score was Dunbar's 21st career rushing touchdown. He moved into sole possession of fifth place on the NT career rushing touchdowns list.
The Mean Green trailed at the half and was held to just one field goal in the second phase.
Chase Baine made his first start in a Mean Green uniform. He completed 9 of 17 passes, and rushed for 80 yards.
Zach Olen made four field goals in the game, which is the most by an NT player since Denis Hopovac hit five in the seven-overtime game against FIU in 2006. The four field goals is tied for the third most in a single game in school history.
Olen hit his fourth field goal of the game, a 27-yarder, at the start of the fourth quarter, to cut the Mean Green deficit to two points, 21-19.
ASU responded with a field goal of its own, a 39-yarder, that extended the Red Wolves' lead to 24-19 with 9:40 left in the game.
Aplin had a hand in all three of ASU's touchdowns in the first half. He started off the scoring with a 13-yard run and then ended the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass. The quarterback gave ASU a 21-3 advantage with a nine-yard run at the start of the second quarter.
The Mean Green came back from a 21-3 deficit in the second quarter to enter half behind, 21-16.
Royce Hill recovered a fumble and Jamaal Jackson caught a 31-yard pass to set up Olen's third 37-yard field goal of the first half. The field goal cut the Arkansas State lead to 21-16 with six seconds left in the first half.
The freshman's four kicks are the first of his career and the distance of 37 yards is the longest by the Mean Green this season.
North Texas dug itself into a hole early in the game by fumbling on its first offensive possession. Arkansas State recovered the ball on the North Texas 21-yard line and scored six plays later on an Aplin 13-yard rush.
The Mean Green responded with a 61-yard drive, resulting with a 37-yard field goal. Baine had a 33-yard run in the drive. The run was the longest by an NT quarterback and the second-longest overall by a Mean Green player.
The Red Wolves added a second touchdown at 3:18 in the first quarter with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Aplin to Dwayne Frampton. Aplin rushed for his second touchdown run of the game at the start of the second quarter. The touchdown gave ASU a 21-3 advantage.
Dunbar scored NT's first touchdown of the game at 7:32 in the second quarter. The one-yard rush capped an 11-play drive. The Mean Green did not attempt a passing play in the drive. On ASU's next offensive possession, Kelvin Jackson forced a three-and-out for the Mean Green with the first sack of his career. He added another in the third quarter. Both came on third down for the Red Wolves.
Olen connected on his second 37-yard field goal of the game at 1:30 in the first half. The field goal cut the ASU lead to 21-13.
The Red Wolves drove into Mean Green territory at the end of the first half, but Royce Hill recovered a fumble to end the threat.
North Texas and Arkansas State exchanged punts in the third quarter. Will Atterberry's 70-yard boot was a career long and goes down as the 14th longest in school history.
