Playing against the world is never easy, but Rodolfo Casaubon and Carlos Ortiz did just that as they completed play in their opening round of the WATC (World Amateur Team Championship) for Mexico.
Facing competition from across the globe, Cazaubon and Ortiz played quite well. The field of 70 teams was separated into two groups, one playing the Beunos Aires course today and the other the Olivos Golf Club course, which Cazaubon and Ortiz were on.
Ortiz had the best day for Team Mexico as he fired an even-par round of 71. Ortiz was his usual, very steady and mistake free. Ortiz had three birdies, three bogey's, and 12 pars in his round. His is tied for 23rd after his opening round.
Cazaubon shot a 1-over par 72 in his first round. His scorecard was clean as a whistle after nine holes with all par's to start off. His back nine was a roller-coaster. He started with two straight birdies, and then had a bogey and then a double bogey. Cazaubon recovered to post one more birdie before finishing and sits in a great position as he is tied for 38th place.
Did I mention the field has 206 players?
The Mexican team is tied for 11th place, ironically with the United States team. Both shot 1-over par 143 scores. The teams are made up of three players and the two lowest scores make up the team score for the day.
Ortiz and Cazaubon had the two low scores for Team Mexico.
Tomorrow the guys switch over to the Buenos Aires course, which is slightly longer but played a lot easier today than the Olivos course did.
France raced out to the early lead with a 7-over par 137 on the easier Buenos Aires course, but tomorrow the teams flip and it will give Team Mexico a chance to climb the standings further.
